Top 32 entries of 3rd TERA-Award unveiled
(26 February 2024) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) announced the completion of the preliminary screening for the third TERA-Award Smart Energy Innovation Competition, and the top 32 projects have been selected. These projects come from 11 countries and regions, encompassing all six major competition categories, with “Energy Storage & Conversion” and “Hydrogen” being the categories with the most shortlisted projects.
After the registration deadline on 17th December last year, the latest TERA-Award competition underwent a thorough preliminary screening process conducted by a judging panel consisting of domestic and international experts from the industry, academic and research sectors. From the pool of 450 participating projects, 32 were chosen to enter the next round, representing 11 countries and regions such as China, Canada, Finland, Germany, Israel, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Hong Kong.
The six focus areas of this latest edition of the competition include “Renewable Energy”, “Energy Storage & Conversion”, “Carbon Neutrality”, “Hydrogen”, “Energy Digitalisation”, and the newly introduced “Green Smart City”. The shortlist includes projects from all six categories, with “Energy Storage and Energy Conversion” and “Hydrogen Energy” having the highest number of shortlisted entries, with 11 and 8, respectively (see attached table for details).
Mr Alan Chan Ying-lung, Executive Chairman of the TERA-Award Organising Committee and Chief Investment Officer of Towngas, said, “This year’s competition has witnessed a remarkable influx of highly competitive projects, characterised by a multitude of innovative solutions and technologies with significant development potential. We look forward to participants leveraging their involvement in the TERA-Award to translate their innovative concepts into commercial achievements successfully. The TERA-Award goes beyond merely a scientific competition; it serves as a comprehensive incubation platform that integrates application scenarios, investment opportunities, and prize incentives, thereby propelling the growth of zero-carbon technology startups.” Mr Chan expressed his gratitude to the judging panel for their meticulous work in selecting the top 32 projects based on professional evaluation criteria. The panel will continue with the subsequent phases of the selection process, with the mission of “Exploring Zero-Carbon Innovations for the Future”.
The top 32 projects will undergo further selection, during which they will showcase their innovative concepts, development strategies, and more to the expert judging panel. The panel will evaluate the projects based on four key criteria: innovation, implementation, talent capability, and commercial viability. From this evaluation, the top 10 projects will advance to the final, and the award winners will be announced in April.
The third edition of the TERA-Award witnessed remarkable global participation, with 450 zero-carbon technology entrepreneurial projects from 59 countries and regions. This represents an increase of over 40% and 60% compared to the previous edition, marking the highest number of entries in the competition’s history.
The TERA-Award is dedicated to establishing a global entrepreneurial service platform integrating application scenarios, prize money, and investment. Apart from the top project being eligible for a US$1 million prize, all winning teams also stand a chance to receive support from investors and businesses to materialise their projects. Experts, renowned mentors, and investors from various fields will also engage in meaningful exchanges with the award-winning teams, facilitating the rapid growth and practical implementation of the projects.
