(21 September 2025) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has been awarded the highest honour in the Enterprise Group category – The Grand Award – at the Industry Cares Recognition Scheme 2025, hosted by the Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI), in recognition of its people-centred, diversified initiatives. Towngas also received The Most Devoted Award and The Best CSV Award. The Company is deeply encouraged by these three accolades recognising its corporate social responsibility efforts.
Speaking at the Industry Cares presentation ceremony, Mr Don Cheng Hill-kwong, Chief Operating Officer – Hong Kong Business of Towngas, said that having served Hong Kong for 163 years, Towngas has always walked alongside the community whilst integrating technological innovation into community care. “On one hand, the Company promotes ageing in place through our in-house developed gerontechnology hardware, such as the Smart Controller and Smart Meter. On the other, we support the elderly, young people and various community groups through diversified volunteer services.” The Company is honoured to receive industry recognition for promoting sustainable development and creating shared value.
Caring for the community: supporting elderly care and dementia support
This September, in support of World Alzheimer’s Month, Towngas organised Hong Kong’s first-ever Recipes of Remembrance cooking competition. As an extension of the Chef Anchor 3.0 programme, the activity invited individuals with dementia and their carers to participate together, cleverly integrating cognitive training into the cooking process. Through heartwarming cooking and emotional exchanges, the programme helps slow the progression of the condition whilst providing meaningful life experiences for participants.
Since launching the Sending Warmth to Thousands with Smart Technology programme in 2022, Towngas has provided free Smart Controller installations for elderly households, enabling carers to monitor gas appliance status and switch off the gas remotely. This ensures safety whilst allowing elderly residents to continue enjoying flame cooking. This year, Towngas further introduced the Gas Guardian Care Network initiative, which monitors gas usage data through Smart Meters. When abnormal patterns are detected, the system automatically sends mobile alerts to carers, reminding them to check on the elderly in a timely manner.
Nurturing the future: career launch for young people
Towngas actively promotes youth development through its year-long Career in a Nutshell programme, which allows secondary school students to experience simulated career development stages. Under mentor guidance, students gain an in-depth understanding of the energy sector and other professional fields. Participants not only acquire practical skills in project management and communication but also establish a clear direction through exploration, preparing themselves for further education and employment.
Looking ahead, Towngas will continue to build upon its professional knowledge and technology, deepening its corporate social responsibility programmes, injecting positive energy into the community, and contributing to Hong Kong’s sustainable development and social harmony.
