(1 June 2025) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) is committed to nurturing the next generation through active promotion of energy and environmental education in schools. This academic year, the Company’s educational initiative, the Towngas Green Flame Energy Scientist Programme, has been focusing on biodiversity and hosted a parent-child comic strip competition called “Exploring Our Natural World” to raise students’ awareness of conservation. The competition attracted nearly 1,000 entries, and winners have recently been selected. Towngas has compiled the winning and shortlisted works into a book, which will be distributed to over 40 participating primary schools as supplementary teaching aid to further promote conservation messages. Additionally, the Company recently arranged for winning and shortlisted families to participate in Ocean Park’s “Conservation Journey”, visiting the frontlines of Hong Kong’s conservation efforts.
Mr Felix Lee Kin-ming, Towngas Head of Group Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, said, “The worsening climate change threatens species’ habitats, leading to declining biodiversity that affects human welfare globally—an issue that deserves our attention. Towngas has always been committed to creating a cleaner, more environmentally friendly world, which depends on the participation of future generations. That’s why this year’s Towngas Green Flame Energy Scientist Programme includes a series of educational activities—school talks, the comic competition, and off-campus visits—to deepen students’ understanding of biodiversity and raise their awareness of environmental conservation.”
The comic competition encouraged students and parents to express their hopes for harmony between humans and nature through artistic creation. The enthusiastic response resulted in nearly 1,000 submissions, with winners selected by a professional judging panel. To recognise participants’ outstanding performance and further promote conservation messages, Towngas has compiled the exceptional artwork into a collection, enhanced with additional content such as green energy applications, Hong Kong’s diverse ecosystems, and interesting animal facts. The Company will provide these books to participating schools to support environmental education initiatives.
In May this year, Towngas also invited winning and shortlisted families to Ocean Park for a “Conservation Journey” activity. Participants had the opportunity to meet dolphins, seals and other animals up close, while animal caretakers from the Park explained the animals’ physical characteristics, dietary habits, and caretaking techniques to students and parents. This gave participants an in-depth understanding of Hong Kong’s scientific research and conservation work, fostering a deeper appreciation for environmental issues.
Beyond school education, Towngas has expanded cross-sector collaborations to promote environmental conservation. In 2024, the Company organised the Biodiversity and New Energies Symposium, inviting representatives from the business sector, conservation organisations, and academia to discuss popular Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) topics, including balancing social development with ecological conservation. Additionally, Towngas continues to collaborate with an environmental group on a Plantation Enrichment Programme, planting native tree seedlings in Hong Kong’s country parks to provide food and habitat for various wildlife species, enhancing the ecological value of afforested areas and strengthening biodiversity.
Looking ahead, Towngas will continue to expand the Towngas Green Flame Energy Scientist Programme to more primary schools, enriching students’ understanding of new energy development and environmental protection through diverse learning experiences. Simultaneously, the Company will collaborate with various stakeholders to build a sustainable future together.
