Towngas shares energy transition experience at World Gas Conference

(2 June 2025) The 29th World Gas Conference (WGC2025) was successfully held at the China National Convention Centre in Beijing from 19 to 23 May. Under the theme “Energising a Sustainable Future”, the conference attracted over 3,000 industry leaders and experts from approximately 70 countries and regions for in-depth exchanges. The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) was invited to participate, with Managing Director Mr Peter Wong Wai-yee, Chief Operating Officer – Hong Kong Business Mr Don Cheng Hill-kwong, and Chief Operating Officer - Mainland Utilities Mr Martin Kee Wai-ngai speaking at various forums, sharing Towngas’s development experience and achievements, contributing to the industry’s future development.

WGC2025 featured more than 80 high-level forums. Managing Director Mr Peter Wong Wai-yee, as a panellist at one of the conference’s panel discussions, engaged with other distinguished guests on “The Diversity of Gas Development Globally”. Mr Wong reflected on Towngas Group’s innovative practices in developing diversified businesses and energy transition. He noted that to support the national “dual carbon” goals, the Group provides energy solutions including rooftop distributed photovoltaics, energy storage, and green power trading for high-pollution enterprises, whilst vigorously developing green energy businesses such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and green methanol. Additionally, in Hong Kong, the Group is exploring safe and cost-effective hydrogen extraction technologies and applications by capitalising on the approximately 50% hydrogen content in its gas supply to continuously improve air quality.

Addressing the future impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the industry, Mr Wong emphasised that AI will not replace human workers, but utilising AI for data analysis and forecasting will help optimise operational processes, reduce labour costs, and better meet customers’ energy needs. On energy transition issues, he called for governments to establish sensible policies that avoid “one-size-fits-all” regulatory approaches, whilst urging the reduction of energy costs through infrastructure interconnection to build a sustainable gas industry ecosystem.

At the “Opportunities and Challenges of Hydrogen Energy” Current Debates session co-hosted by Towngas, Chief Operating Officer – Hong Kong Business Mr Don Cheng Hill-kwong served as moderator, engaging guests in an in-depth dialogue on the development and collaborative opportunities in the hydrogen energy industry. Mr Cheng noted that hydrogen energy, as a key vehicle for driving energy transition, is now at a crucial stage moving from technical exploration to scaled application. He mentioned that Hong Kong has over 160 years of experience operating hydrogen-rich gas, and Towngas Group is currently capitalising on the advantages of the Greater Bay Area to actively create demonstration projects for hydrogen energy in transportation and construction site power generation, whilst promoting the integration of hydrogen energy with gas networks to provide exploratory experience for upgrading urban energy structures.

Additionally, at the “Natural Gas Pipeline Network Operations” discussion, Chief Operating Officer – Mainland Utilities Mr Martin Kee Wai-ngai shared insights on topics such as the safe operation of natural gas pipelines and resource coordination. He highlighted that since Towngas entered the Chinese mainland 30 years ago, it has pioneered an in-home safety inspection system to prevent leaks and ensure customer safety, which subsequently became a national standard. Regarding technology’s impact on pipeline operation and maintenance, Mr Kee noted that Towngas continuously integrates advanced technologies such as AI into daily operations and management, and has independently built a smart operations platform to ensure safety.

The World Gas Conference is one of the three flagship events of the International Gas Union (IGU), held every three years and dubbed the Olympics of the global gas industry. The 29th World Gas Conference marked the first time the event was held in China. During the conference, the exhibition pavilion set up by Towngas attracted numerous industry peers from both the Chinese mainland and overseas. The pavilion also featured a dedicated section for the TERA-Award Smart Energy Innovation Competition, showcasing the achievements in energy technology innovation since the competition’s establishment, which drew significant interest from visitors from various countries and regions.
