(13 July 2026) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) partners with the E&M Young Ambassador Programme to co-host the Towngas Green Flame Hydrogen City Design Competition, which has successfully concluded. The competition's final and awards presentation ceremony was held on 11 July, during which finalists presented their innovative ideas on future hydrogen energy solutions to a judging panel using self-created city models. The winning entries vividly demonstrated the unlimited possibilities of hydrogen energy applications, spanning commercial buildings, airports, and theme parks. Towngas looks forward to continuous collaboration with the education sector to enhance public awareness of hydrogen energy development in Hong Kong.
Centred on the theme of hydrogen cities, the competition attracted applications from approximately 60 primary schools. Prior to the final, Towngas arranged a series of complimentary workshops and educational visits to familiarise students with the scientific knowledge of hydrogen. Participants also joined site visits to witness the operations of the hydrogen-powered EV charging system at the Towngas Headquarters and the hydrogen fuel cell street washing vehicle at the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) Headquarters. 14 primary school teams were shortlisted for the final, where they conceptualised and brought their visions of a future hydrogen city to life through detailed models.
Mr Don Cheng Hill-kwong, Towngas Chief Operating Officer - Hong Kong Business, stated at the awards presentation ceremony that “The HKSAR Government has announced Strategy of Hydrogen Development in Hong Kong, paving the way for the opportunities brought by the development of hydrogen energy. Notably, the town gas produced by Towngas is approximately half hydrogen, which can be delivered through an extensive underground pipeline network spanning across the territory. This signifies our unique advantages in hydrogen energy development.” He expressed hope that students could grasp the science behind hydrogen through this competition, encouraging them to actively explore a low-carbon future powered by green energies.
Mr Poon Kwok-ying, Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, attended the ceremony as an officiating guest. In his speech, he highlighted the environmental friendliness of hydrogen energy, as it only emits water when being consumed. Furthermore, the National 15th Five-Year Plan Outline indicated that hydrogen energy is one of the industries of the future. He added that EMSD has formulated legislation and technical guidelines related to hydrogen safety, and is actively coordinating and reviewing local trial projects on hydrogen fuel technology to drive green city development. He encouraged students to unleash their creativity and contribute to the green blueprint outlined in the National 15th Five-Year Plan.
Another officiating guest, Hon Tang Fei, Legislative Council Member (Education Constituency), stated that the competition served as an excellent platform for STEAM learning. He expressed that “with the full subsidy offered by Towngas, students were provided with invaluable learning opportunities at no cost. Engaging in water electrolysis experiments to understand hydrogen production offers a truly ‘out-of-the-classroom’ learning experience. Putting scientific theories into solutions for real-world environmental issues perfectly exemplifies ‘learning for practical use’ – a core educational philosophy we strongly advocate.”
Towngas has always been committed to building a sustainable future and has been actively developing our green energy businesses in recent years, including hydrogen energy development in Hong Kong. Among the 40 trial projects on hydrogen fuel technology approved by the HKSAR Government, Towngas is participating in nine, covering application scenarios such as transportation, construction sites, and mega events. The Company is also participating in a green hydrogen project at the South East New Territories Landfill Extension in Tseung Kwan O, utilising biogas to produce green hydrogen. The project is expected to commence production this year, producing approximately 330 kg of “Made-in-Hong Kong” green hydrogen daily, which would drive the development of Hong Kong's hydrogen economy.
Looking ahead, Towngas will continue to act as a pioneer in Hong Kong's hydrogen energy development, continuously expanding hydrogen application to more scenarios to allow the public to experience the cleanliness and efficiency of hydrogen energy. Meanwhile, the Company will continue to collaborate closely with stakeholders including the government, business sectors and academia to form a hydrogen ecosystem in Hong Kong, joining hands to achieve a hydrogen economy.
