Towngas and NGO collaborate again post-pandemic to care for the physical and mental needs of the underprivileged

(21 December 2023) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has partnered with the Christian Family Service Centre to launch the Love on Delivery programme to support grassroots families. This year, under the theme “Exploring Fresh Culinary Ideas”, both parties have organised a tabletop game competition, a farming activity, and a cooking competition to promote their physical and mental well-being and aid their post-pandemic recovery towards a normal lifestyle.

Earlier this month, the Love on Delivery programme hosted the Kitchen Fun family cooking competition, where 15 parent-child teams stepped out of their kitchens and showcased their culinary talents at the Towngas Cooking Centre. From brainstorming recipes to preparing ingredients and completing the dishes, the parent-child teams collaborated closely, enhancing family communication and interaction. Following the judging process, the champion, first and second runners-up, as well as five recipients of merit awards were announced. Ms Chan and her 8-year-old son, who took part in the competition, said, “This was the first time we cooked together, and it was a truly enjoyable experience for both of us.”

During October and November this year, the programme held two Fun Farming sessions. Towngas volunteers led 24 families, comprising a total of 60 individuals, to an organic farm to learn about crop harvesting, organic fertiliser production, weed removal, and hydroponics. Angel, one of the participants, expressed how rare and precious this outdoor activity was, “In the past few years, due to the pandemic, my son and I have had limited chances to unwind and enjoy the outdoors. Especially since my son has special educational needs, this activity was like a breath of fresh air for me. It was incredibly meaningful for him to understand how crops grow.”

In November this year, the programme also organised the Memory Challenge parent-child tabletop game competition. The game integrated the idea of “love languages”, such as “affirming compliment” and “caring embrace”, into its gameplay. The event was a mix of excitement and warmth, with 32 parent-child teams participating and experiencing the importance of supporting each other. Children learned valuable lessons on overcoming setbacks and gained a deeper understanding of their family’s enduring presence and support throughout their journey of growth. This activity proved to be a cherished opportunity to learn about the importance of harmonious family relationships.

Since 2020, Towngas has joined hands with the Christian Family Service Centre to initiate the Love on Delivery programme. Through various online and offline activities, the programme has supported over 2,400 beneficiary families during the pandemic. The support included providing essential assistance such as fresh meal packs as well as food and beverage vouchers, addressing their daily needs. Additionally, the programme allowed social workers to establish contact with these families and offer timely assistance when required.
