(10 March 2026) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) successfully provided internationally certified green methanol marine fuel for Hong Kong’s first green methanol simultaneous operations (SIMOPS) bunkering. Successfully completed at the Kwai Tsing Container Terminals, this historic operation not only significantly enhanced the terminal’s operational efficiency but also marked a pivotal step forward for Hong Kong in developing green shipping and the application of new energy.
The 200 tonnes of green methanol bunkered in this operation was produced at the Inner Mongolia facility of VENEX, a joint venture between Towngas and Foran Energy. Coordinated by Chimbusco Pan Nation Petro-Chemical Company Limited (CPN), the fuel was successfully transferred to a COSCO SHIPPING container vessel in Hong Kong via the methanol dual-fuel bunker vessel DAQING 268.
Towngas has consistently been committed to providing clean, sustainable fuel solutions for the global shipping industry. The VENEX Inner Mongolia facility utilises proprietary technology to convert waste biomass into green methanol. The product has obtained multiple international certifications, including ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS, which can help vessels utilising the fuel comply with the decarbonisation targets of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
To meet the growing market demand for green methanol, Towngas has actively established partnerships with the Government and the industry over the past two years. The Company has successively signed memoranda of understanding with CPN and the Transport and Logistics Bureau, establishing an arrangement where Towngas produces and supplies green methanol, while CPN distributes it to shipping customers. Simultaneously, Towngas has been incorporated by the HKSAR Government into the green maritime fuel business cooperation platform, committing to supply green methanol complying with international standards in Hong Kong, and utilising Hong Kong as a hub for delivery, bunkering, and trade settlement to fully connect with the international market.
The successful completion of this operation demonstrates that the green methanol supply chain jointly established by Towngas and its partners operates smoothly across all stages, from production and cross-border logistics distribution to end-user bunkering. Looking ahead, Towngas will continue to expand its green methanol production capacity to meet the shipping industry’s green transition needs. The Company will also continuously enhance the green fuel supply chain to consolidate Hong Kong’s position as an international shipping centre, while driving Hong Kong’s development into a leading international green maritime fuel bunkering and trading centre.
