Hydrogen Energy
Hydrogen is a clean energy source that emits only water during use, making it an ideal alternative fuel for transportation, power generation, and energy storage. Hydrogen constitutes approximately 50% of the town gas mix and can be easily extracted from our extensive pipeline network spanning across Hong Kong. With over 160 years of experience handling hydrogen and proven technologies for hydrogen extraction and storage, we are uniquely positioned to capitalise on business opportunities in hydrogen energy. We are actively developing projects including supplying hydrogen for vehicles, generating power for construction sites, and providing charging services for electric vehicles.
Additionally, Towngas has partnered with a landfill operator, Veolia, to develop Hong Kong’s first green hydrogen project at the South East New Territories Landfill Extension in Tseung Kwan O. This initiative utilises biogas to produce green hydrogen, achieving waste-to-energy conversion.
Green Methanol
Green methanol is a low-carbon biofuel and a circular chemical, which is particularly in high demand by the maritime transport industry. At our methanol plant in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, we produce green methanol using end-of-life tyres and biomass waste as feedstock. Our products comply with the European Union’s stringent requirements for sustainable biofuels and chemical products, having obtained certifications under the ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS schemes.
We have officially launched green methanol bunkering services in Shanghai and Singapore. In addition, we have formed cooperation agreements with multiple marine fuel traders and bunkering service providers, covering major ports across Asia. These partnerships have facilitated our establishment of a green methanol supply network throughout the region.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Incubated as an eco-innovation company,
EcoCeres, Inc. focuses on the innovative technologies that convert waste-based biomass into a diverse range of renewable fuels and products, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO).
The plant in Jiangsu province is the world's first ISCC-CORSIA Plus approved SAF processing facility which fulfils all ISCC sustainability requirements of ecological and social criteria.
To align with the EU's climate objectives, it is anticipated that by 2050, at least 70% of aviation fuel used for flights departing from EU airports will be Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This highlights significant market growth potential. We are currently constructing an additional plant in Malaysia to meet the rising demand.
