Towngas JV VENEX receives first Global Sustainable Transport Certification

(7 July 2026) VENEX Company Limited (VENEX), a joint venture of The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas), has been awarded one of the first certifications under the Global Sustainable Transport Certification (GSTC) scheme at the Shanghai International Shipping Green Fuel Sustainable Development Conference, becoming the only Hong Kong company among the inaugural certified entities.

The GSTC framework, jointly established by the Global Sustainable Transport Innovation and Knowledge Center, China Classification Society, China Energy Engineering Group, and COSCO SHIPPING Logistics Supply Chain Co., Ltd., sets internationally credible standards for sustainable transport fuel assessment. The certification involves independent third-party verification across the full lifecycle—from raw materials to end products—covering resource sustainability, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, traceability, and environmental and social impact.

Combining technical standards with on-site verification, GSTC evaluates the full value chain, from feedstock and energy inputs to production processes and end-use emissions. This provides a clear and practical benchmark for marine fuels, enhancing buyer confidence and helping the shipping industry identify genuinely low-carbon fuel options.

VENEX’s green methanol project in Inner Mongolia adopts co-gasification technology to convert waste materials such as used tyres and biomass into green methanol, with an annual production capacity of 100,000 tonnes. The project has successfully completed the first batch of trial assessments under the GSTC framework, confirming compliance with certification requirements.

Mr Sham Man-fai, Towngas Chief Operating Officer – Green Fuel and Chemicals and Group Chief Technology Officer, said the certification marks a significant milestone for VENEX. “VENEX will continue to uphold high standards in advancing green fuel production and operations, delivering on its commitment to low-carbon transition and supporting the long-term development of sustainable transportation and green shipping.”

VENEX will continue to enhance its production technology, expand green methanol capacity and distribution, and strengthen collaboration across ports, shipping, energy, and chemical sectors, aligning with national “dual carbon” goals and accelerating the maritime industry’s low-carbon transition.
