(22 July 2026) VENEX Company Limited (VENEX), a joint venture of The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas), has been featured in the 2026 Global Sustainable Transport Best Practice Collection, making it the sole Hong Kong enterprise selected for this year’s publication. Earlier this month, Towngas was invited to a United Nations (UN) conference to share its outstanding practice of producing green methanol from waste desert shrubs—an initiative that promotes local desertification control and a community circular economy—demonstrating its ongoing support for the development of sustainable transport energy.

The UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development took place earlier this month at the UN Headquarters in New York. As part of the proceedings, the Permanent Missions of Turkmenistan and China to the UN, alongside the Global Sustainable Transport Innovation and Knowledge Center, co-hosted a side event on 8 July. Under the theme “Advancing the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035): Partnerships, Data-Driven Solutions and Coordinated Action for Accelerating the 2030 Agenda”, the session sought to gather and promote sustainable transport solutions from across the globe.

Representing Towngas at the event, Mr Sham Man-fai, Towngas Chief Operating Officer – Green Fuels and Chemicals and Group Chief Technology Officer, outlined VENEX’s proactive efforts to advance sustainable transport. He noted that VENEX’s green methanol production base in Inner Mongolia adopts a localised approach by collecting waste branches—generated from the pruning of sand willow and other desert shrubs—from local communities, converting this biomass waste into a raw material for green methanol. This operational model not only supports the community circular economy in desert areas but also provides a low-carbon energy alternative for international shipping.

Mr Sham stated, “VENEX’s innovative approach to sustainability has earned both domestic and international recognition. Our production facility in Inner Mongolia has secured two major global certifications—ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS—and just last month, it was awarded the Global Sustainable Transport Certification (GSTC). We hope VENEX will continue to refine its production technologies, offering a viable practical solution for the global development of sustainable transport.”

Looking ahead, VENEX will capitalise on Hong Kong’s distinct advantage as an international maritime hub to continually connect with global markets. By supplying green methanol products that meet international standards, the company remains dedicated to supporting the sustainable development of global shipping.
