(19 January 2026) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has partnered with the E&M Young Ambassador Programme to launch the Towngas Green Flame Hydrogen City Design Competition, inviting upper primary school students across Hong Kong to participate and encouraging them to unleash their creativity by creating models that showcase their vision forfuture hydrogen-powered cities. Towngas will provide a series of free lessons, hands-on workshops and site visits, enabling participating students to gain an in-depth understanding of hydrogen energy principles and their practical applications in sectors such as building development and transportation, working together to build sustainable, low-carbon cities.

The competition comprises two major stages. Teams shortlisted in the first stage will be invited to green hydrogen experimental workshops to produce hydrogen through water electrolysis. Students will also visit Towngas Headquarters to learn about the daily operations of an energy enterprise and observe real-world hydrogen energy applications. Advancing teams will subsequently have the opportunity to participate in hydrogen model car races and to visit the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department headquarters, further deepening their knowledge of energy science and innovation technology. Finalist teams will showcase their city models, demonstrating the diverse applications of hydrogen energy. To support students in enriching their learning experiences, Towngas will fully subsidise all participation costs.

Mr Bien Wong Chun-cheung, Assistant General Manager – Group ESG of Towngas, stated: “Towngas is committed to developing hydrogen energy in Hong Kong and expanding its applications. As a clean and efficient new energy source, students need to deepen their understanding of hydrogen energy. Through the Towngas Green Flame Hydrogen City Design Competition, we hope to encourage students to conceptualise how hydrogen energy can be integrated into communities from fresh perspectives, exploring groundbreaking green energy solutions. At the same time, we hope the competition can enhance students’ interest in energy science and stimulate their potential in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics).” He called upon schools to form teams to participate, broadening students’ perspectives on scientific topics.

Hydrogen energy is both efficient and clean. Notably, the town gas produced by Towngas is approximately half hydrogen, which can be extracted for use from the gas pipelines distributed across Hong Kong. Towngas is actively supporting the HKSAR Government’s Strategy of Hydrogen Development in Hong Kong by promoting various innovative hydrogen energy pilot projects. These include the use of hydrogen generators to power a golf tournament venue during last year’s National Games. Additionally, Towngas is participating in Hong Kong’s first green hydrogen production project, which will utilise biogas from landfills to produce green hydrogen, with the first batch of locally produced green hydrogen expected to commence production in the second quarter of this year.
