(14 May 2026) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (“Towngas”) and EnerVenue Holdings, Ltd. (“EnerVenue”) have jointly announced the official commissioning of a pilot project for the fourth-generation Aqueous Metal Cell (AMC) energy storage technology, invested by Towngas, in Jintan, Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. The AMC features durability, stability and safety, with a lifespan at least five times that of lithium-ion batteries, and can operate normally in extreme temperatures. The technology has been officially deployed at an electric bus charging station equipped with a solar power generation system in Jintan District. This marks the world’s first real-world deployment of the technology, providing a new, high-quality option for commercial, industrial, and grid-scale applications.

An electric bus charging station in Jintan District, Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, has become the world’s first project to adopt EnerVenue’s latest energy storage technology. Operated by Towngas Smart Energy Company Limited, a subsidiary of Towngas, the modular Energy Rack is equipped with 50 AMCs, delivering a total storage capacity of 150kWh. The energy storage system performs continuous 2- to 4-hour charge and discharge cycles daily for the bus charging station. Combined with a solar power generation system, it not only effectively reduces energy costs but also demonstrates exceptional performance in its overall operation.

Currently, the design life of lithium-ion batteries is typically 6,000 to 8,000 charge and discharge cycles, and they require rest periods in between cycles. If subjected to continuous, high-frequency charging and discharging, their performance will rapidly degrade, potentially even leading to safety risks such as thermal runaway.

In contrast, EnerVenue’s fourth-generation AMC energy storage technology boasts outstanding safety performance. It can operate stably in environments ranging from -20°C to +60°C, making it suitable for extreme conditions. Furthermore, the cells do not contain lithium materials or toxic electrolytes, and they can be easily recycled at the end of their lifecycle, offering the advantages of being environmentally friendly and having low maintenance costs.

In addition to this demonstration project with Towngas, EnerVenue will also launch more commercial demonstration systems with other partners worldwide in the coming months. In parallel, EnerVenue’s recently announced $300 million funding round will enable the rapid scale-up of the company’s manufacturing operations in Changzhou, China, where the company’s fourth-generation AMC technology and Energy Racks are made. The construction of a new 250MWh high-volume production line is due to begin later this year.
