Green methanol is a low-carbon fuel and a circular chemical produced from feedstocks such as waste biomass, or with renewable energy. It is an important fuel option for the maritime transport industry in achieving decarbonisation.
At our methanol plant in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, we produce green methanol using end-of-life tyres and biomass waste as feedstock. Our products comply with the European Union’s stringent requirements for sustainable biofuels and chemical products, having obtained certifications under the ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS schemes. The project has also obtained an ISO 14067 product carbon footprint verification statement from TÜV SÜD.
To establish Hong Kong as a green maritime fuel hub, Towngas has entered into a strategic cooperation with parties including the Transport and Logistics Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR government. In March 2026, we successfully provided internationally recognised maritime fuel in support of city’s first simultaneous operations (SIMOPS) green methanol bunkering operation.
To scale up production capacity, we have established a joint venture, VENEX, with Foran Energy and combined our Inner Mongolia plant with the VENEX operation. With the completion of a new plant in Foshan, Guangdong by the end of 2027, the combined annual production capacity of the two plants will reach 500,000 tonnes in 2028.
