Towngas and Geely Farizon form strategic partnership to expand methanol applications in Hong Kong

(22 June 2026) A new low-carbon energy option will soon be available in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Zhejiang Lvdong Alcohol Hydrogen Technology Service Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Geely Farizon New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group (Geely Farizon). Both parties will collaborate closely on methanol fuel supply, methanol refuelling infrastructure, and the promotion and multi-scenario application of methanol commercial vehicles. This partnership aims to build a comprehensive methanol energy value chain and drive the low-carbon transition of Hong Kong’s transport and construction sectors.

Hong Kong is actively aligning with the National 15th Five-Year Plan, with energy transition as a key priority. Methanol stands out as a promising low-carbon energy alternative. Under this agreement, Towngas and Geely Farizon will jointly plan a methanol supply system for vehicles in Hong Kong and explore site selection and operational models for local methanol refuelling facilities in the city. Capitalising on their respective networks and technological strengths of both parties, the two companies will jointly facilitate the supply of green methanol and the deployment of commercial vehicles, supporting their phased rollout across the city.

Methanol produces lower emissions than diesel and is highly suitable for heavy-duty vehicles and temporary power generation at construction sites, thereby helping to improve air quality.

This collaboration marks a key milestone for Towngas’s expansion of its downstream methanol business. Mr Don Cheng Hill-kwong, Towngas Chief Operating Officer – Hong Kong Business, said: “Towngas is actively responding to the national dual carbon strategy and the carbon neutrality targets set by the HKSAR Government by continuously investing in a diversified portfolio of clean energy solutions. As the demand for low-carbon energy continues to rise among local transport and construction operators, the Group will drawing on VENEX’s comprehensive methanol value chain capabilities and partner with Geely Farizon to drive the integration of the energy and transport sectors, jointly building a methanol application network tailored to Hong Kong.”

Dr Song Zhaohuan, Vice President of Geely Farizon New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group, stated: "By capitalising on Towngas's energy network and Geely Farizon's technological expertise, we will jointly drive the stable supply of green methanol fuel and its application in vehicles, providing systematic support for green transport in Hong Kong."

VENEX, a Towngas joint venture, is steadily expanding its green methanol production capacity. It currently operates a production plant in Inner Mongolia, while a new manufacturing base in Foshan is under construction. The combined annual output of the two facilities is projected to reach 500,000 tonnes by 2028, with a long-term annual production target of 1 million tonnes to ensure a stable steady of green fuel. VENEX utilises proprietary technologies to convert waste tyres, as well as agricultural and forestry residues, into renewable energy. Its green methanol products have been awarded the EU-recognised ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS sustainability certifications for several consecutive years.

This strategic partnership marks the official launch of methanol energy deployment in Hong Kong, supporting the city’s progress towards its 2050 carbon neutrality goal.
