(29 July 2026) The Hong Kong and China Gas Charity Foundation recently hosted a community showcase in Tuen Mun. Alongside celebrity musical performances and a qipao fashion show featuring elderly models, the event included a home safety seminar offering practical advice on fire safety and fall prevention. In total, the event drew around 450 elderly participants.
Statistics show that over 70% of people aged 65 and above have experienced a fall, with a quarter of these accidents occurring at home, most commonly due to slippery bathroom floors. During the showcase, experts broke down the three most common causes of falls at home for the elderly: slippery floors, inadequate lighting, and inappropriate footwear. The speaker explained that puddles in the bathroom and cluttered floors make it highly likely for elderly individuals to slip or trip. Poor indoor lighting (often because elderly people find it a hassle to turn on the lights) and walking around in only thermal socks without slip resistance are also major contributing factors to household falls.
To help prevent accidents, the speaker recommended using non-slip bathroom mats, installing sensor lights in corridors and by the bed, and fitting wall grab rails. Such age-friendly adaptations can significantly improve safety. Just as falls can be prevented, so can fires; the speaker also advised installing smoke alarms to further reduce household risks.
Mr Clarence Leung Wang-ching, Under Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, attended the event and remarked that the elderly have dedicated years of effort to the community, making their daily safety and well-being a priority for all sectors of society. He noted that pairing recreational activities with practical safety advice addresses both their mental health needs and their physical safety at home.
Ms Catherine Wong Pui-yee, Head of Corporate Affairs and Government Relations at Towngas, stated that the Company deeply understands the importance of home safety for the older generation. She emphasised their commitment to promoting a “three-pronged prevention” message of anti-scam, fire safety, and fall prevention within the community, delivering practical safety knowledge in a clear and accessible way.
The community showcase featured a diverse programme. In addition to the home safety tips, it included celebrity singing performances and prize quizzes. Every elderly participant also received a goodie bag and a walking stick umbrella from Towngas.
Towngas will continue to collaborate with local partners to launch more community initiatives tailored to the everyday needs of the elderly, translating its social responsibility as a public utility into concrete action.
