(28 May 2025) Every year on the eve of the Dragon Boat Festival, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) organises rice dumpling-wrapping and distribution activities with the community, adding a human touch to the festive season. This year marks the 26th consecutive year of the Rice Dumplings for the Community event, continuing to combine traditional culture with community care. Under the coordination of Towngas’s Community Relations Focus Team (CRFT), the Company has partnered with district councillors across all 18 districts, members of the Legislative Council, schools, and social welfare organisations to collectively prepare 180,000 rice dumplings, delivering love and care to every corner of Hong Kong.
This year’s event attracted numerous distinguished guests, including Mr Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen, President of the Legislative Council, and Mrs Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee, Convenor of the Executive Council. They joined volunteers in making rice dumplings and gifting them to residents across various districts, passing on this uniquely Chinese traditional culture in Hong Kong.
Since its inception in 2000, Rice Dumplings for Community has a 26-year history and has given away more than 4.87 million rice dumplings to people from all walks of life. The initiative has also set three Guinness World Records™ titles: “largest display of rice dumplings” in 2000 and 2007, and “most people making rice dumplings simultaneously online and in a single venue” in 2023.
Ms Catherine Wong Pui-yee, Head of CRFT, stated that Towngas will continue to organise more community activities to provide greater care and support for those in need throughout Hong Kong.
