Towngas and WSD establish joint volunteer team to celebrate Lunar New Year with transitional housing residents alongside CFSC
(23 January 2025) The Towngas Volunteer Service Team and the Water Supplies Department Volunteer Team have joined forces to establish the Towngas-WSD Volunteer Team, aiming to provide volunteer services to those in need within the community. For their inaugural event, the team collaborated with the Christian Family Service Centre (CFSC) to host the “Flame × Flow Celebration for a Prosperous Year of the Snake” for residents of transitional housing in Tseung Kwan O, fostering a sense of belonging and wellbeing.
Under CFSC’s social housing project “Criss Cross”, which operates three transitional housing projects in Tseung Kwan O – Yap Ting Terraced Home, Yin Ting Terraced Home, and Po Ting Terraced Home – more than 300 households participated in this Lunar New Year celebration. The event featured a rich programme including performances by the KTG18 Cheerleading Team, which was made up of young children, and street buskers, alongside game booths that incorporated both festive elements and educational content about gas safety and water conservation.
The establishment ceremony of the Towngas-WSD Volunteer Team was held during the event. Mr Don Cheng Hill-kwong, Chief Operating Officer - Hong Kong Business and Head of Sustainable Green Energy Hub of Towngas, noted that water and gas are essential utilities for residents, and hoped that the collaboration between the two organisations would further promote the message of energy conservation. “At the service level, water and gas have long brought warmth and harmony to households across Hong Kong. Looking ahead, we aim to spread the message of green living, low carbon, and environmental protection to more families. This inaugural event by the Towngas-WSD Volunteer Team in transitional housing aims to welcome the Year of the Snake together with residents and bring joy to all.”
Mr Roger Wong Yan-lok, Director of Water Supplies, expressed his hope that the Towngas-WSD Volunteer Team would combine the strengths of both organisations to benefit the community further, “Looking ahead, the Towngas-WSD Volunteer Team will organise more activities to continue spreading the spirit of volunteerism. Through this Lunar New Year celebration, we hope the residents can get to know each other better and develop a stronger sense of belonging to this new community as we welcome the Year of the Snake together.”
Ms Ivy Leung Siu-ling, Chief Executive of CFSC, thanked the volunteer teams from Towngas and WSD for bringing a memorable Lunar New Year celebration to the Criss Cross transitional housing residents. The event also marked the official establishment of the resident-formed Criss Cross Volunteer Team, which will provide volunteer services to residents. Ms Leung stated, “CFSC has always operated with the spirit of ‘One Family · One For Many’, connecting different sectors to serve those in need in our society. Today’s establishment of the Criss Cross Volunteer Team demonstrates that our transitional housing projects not only provide a safe and stable living environment but more importantly create an environment where residents can actively participate, promoting neighbourly sharing and building a loving and happy community.”
Looking ahead, both the Towngas-WSD Volunteer Team and the Criss Cross Volunteer Team will enable volunteers to make meaningful contributions, spread love and care, and bring more positive energy to the community while promoting sustainable social development.
