  • During the Industrial Revolution, coal was used to generate steam, which powered many of the new engines of the time. A Scottish inventor, William Murdoch, seeing even further potential for the fuel, began studying the possibility of producing gas from coal for lighting purposes. In 1972, he achieved his breakthrough, producing gas from heated coal, which burned with a steady flame. Lighting his Cornwall home with this gas, it became the first example of gas lighting in the world. By the turn of the 19th century, gas lighting was being used in a number of private offices and industrial buildings.
