In 2020, Towngas became Hong Kong’s first public utility to receive the ISO 14064-1:2018 (latest edition) accreditation. According to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), ISO 14064-1 is an accreditation on corporation’s quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) data.
Towngas strives to reduce emissions and efficiently utilise resources. The accreditation showcases not only its commitment to implementing management, quantification and reporting of GHG emissions, but also its status as a low-carbon economy pioneer.
In GHG verification, a company’s total GHG emissions are categorised according to three aspects:
Scope 1: Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources
Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy
Scope 3: Other indirect emissions that occur in the value chain, including raw material transport, customers’ use of product/service etc.
Among the GHG emissions from the production of town gas in Hong Kong for year 2020, those under Scope 3, the most significant contributions to Scope 3 emissions in our value chain came from customers’ town gas consumption (Category 11), making up over 70 per cent of total emissions from town gas production. That is why the Company has taken the initiative to help customers reduce GHG emissions and pioneered numerous low-carbon products in order to encourage customers to adopt a green lifestyle and reduce Scope 3 emissions to build a low-carbon future.
GHG emissions from town gas production and combustion accounted for only ~1% and ~3.8% of Hong Kong's total emissions, respectively.
