Towngas to host Biodiversity and New Energies Symposium to explore green energy transition and promote sustainable development

(26 June 2024) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has announced that it will jointly organise the Biodiversity and New Energies Symposium with its subsidiary, Towngas Smart Energy Company Limited (Towngas Smart Energy), on 15 August this year. The event will convene experts from the political and business sectors, academia, and conservation organisations to engage in discussions on biodiversity protection and new energy solutions, with a focus on hydrogen industry development in response to the HKSAR Government’s recently published the Strategy of Hydrogen Development in Hong Kong. Towngas aims to foster cross-sector collaboration and work towards a sustainable future through the Symposium. The event is free to attend, and registration is now open to industry professionals and the public.

The Symposium coincides with National Ecology Day, demonstrating Towngas and Towngas Smart Energy’s support for the country’s promotion of ecological civilisation. Discussion topics include the future of hydrogen energy, green transport powered by new energies, enhanced corporate disclosure of nature-related risk management, and integrating biodiversity into daily business operations. Participants will gain insights into the latest industry trends and developments, with various companies sharing their practical experiences in promoting sustainable development.

Mr Felix Lee Kin-ming, Head of Group ESG / Head of Group Corporate Affairs of Towngas, said, “As global warming intensifies, Towngas recognises the importance of energy transition and is actively developing new energy businesses to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While mitigating climate change, we must also focus on biodiversity, which profoundly affects our economy, health, and daily lives. It is essential for companies to incorporate biodiversity into their risk management and sustainable development strategies.”

Towngas is committed to transforming into a green, low-carbon energy supplier. The company is collaborating with Veolia to develop Hong Kong’s first green hydrogen project, producing hydrogen from landfill biogas. Towngas has also begun supplying hydrogen to customers through underground pipelines in Hong Kong, suitable for use in land transport. Additionally, the green methanol produced by Towngas in Inner Mongolia can be used by the shipping industry, while EcoCeres, Inc., incubated by the Company, is expanding its production capacity for sustainable aviation fuel to provide eco-friendly energy for the aviation sector.

The Symposium will be held at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and will also be livestreamed online. The public is welcome to register for this free event. The online registration platform for the Biodiversity and New Energies Symposium is now open at www.towngassymposium2024.com, where interested parties can find more information and sign up to participate.
