Hong Kong’s first gas-powered food waste processing machine unveiled to promote waste reduction at source

(29 January 2024) Currently, up to 30% of the daily generated waste in Hong Kong consists of food waste. Towngas and a tech company are collaborating to utilise environmentally friendly technology to decompose food waste, resulting in a substantial reduction of over 90% in volume. This significantly alleviates the burden on landfills and promotes waste reduction at source.

Towngas and EASi Solutions Global Technology are teaming up to develop the first gas-powered food waste processing machine in Hong Kong. The working principle behind this machine involves adding a composite microbial culture and utilising biodegradation to break down food and kitchen waste in an environment maintained at temperatures between 75°C and 85°C. This process transforms the waste into substances such as carbon dioxide and water. The food waste processing machine can reduce the volume of food waste by over 90%, leading to significant savings in transportation and processing costs. Moreover, the decomposed food waste can be used as fertiliser, effectively turning waste into a valuable resource.

The food waste processing machine can be installed in various settings, including buildings, hotels, restaurants, hospitals, communities, and housing estates, facilitating waste reduction at source. Furthermore, Towngas’ gas production process contributes to only one per cent of the total carbon emissions in Hong Kong. With the thermal system of the gas-powered food waste machine being driven by a greener and cleaner fuel, this solution can further Hong Kong’s ongoing efforts to cut carbon emissions.

Mr Don Cheng Hill-kwong, Towngas Head of Commercial – Hong Kong Utility and Head of Sustainable Green Energy Hub, expressed his hope that this collaboration will help address the challenges associated with food waste treatment, “The implementation of municipal solid waste charging aims to reduce the amount of waste, and therefore, handling food waste is closely intertwined with this goal. Through this cooperation, we aspire to provide a straightforward and cost-effective waste reduction solution to the industrial, commercial, and residential sectors, effectively tackling the issue of food waste disposal, which constitutes one-third of the waste generated.” Mr Cheng further emphasised that this collaboration serves as a stepping stone for Towngas’ sustainable development initiatives, and more environmentally friendly carbon reduction strategies will be shared with the public in the future.
