Over 100 service users and volunteers gather on Towngas × SAHK Inclusive Floor Curling Fun Day to promote inclusivity

(30 November 2023) SAHK (“the Association”) has continuously provided diverse educational and rehabilitation services for individuals of different ages with different types of disability. The Association frequently collaborates with corporate partners to organise volunteer activities, promoting the spirit of inclusion. This year, the Association once again joined forces with its long-term partner, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (“Towngas”), to co-host the “Towngas × SAHK Inclusive Floor Curling Fun Day”. More than 130 participants, including service users from SAHK and volunteers from Towngas, were divided into teams to take part in the inclusive floor curling competition. The event was characterised by high levels of enthusiasm, as well as an exhilarating and heartwarming atmosphere.

The Floor Curling Fun Day was successfully held at the Madam Kwok Chung Bo Fun Sports and Cultural Centre of Hong Kong Baptist University last Saturday (25 November). It marked the first physical volunteer event co-organised by SAHK and Towngas since the epidemic. Officiating guests of the event included Mr Isaac Yeung Chung-kwan, Head of Corporate ESG / Head of Corporate Affairs of Towngas; Mr. Lam Ho-ling, Chairman of Towngas Volunteer Services Team; Mr Benjamin Wong Kam-ming, Vice Chairperson of Adult Service Management Committee of SAHK; Ms Jacqueline Chow Wai-ying, member of Adult Service Management Committee of SAHK, Mr Eddie Suen Kwok-tung, Chief Executive Officer of SAHK; and Ms Edith Hung Suk-kuen, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of SAHK.

During his speech, Mr Benjamin Wong Kam-ming, Vice Chairperson of Adult Service Management Committee of SAHK, highlighted the longstanding partnership between SAHK and Towngas since 2015. He mentioned that apart from giving away mooncakes and rice dumplings to the SAHK’s service users during festivals, Towngas has actively collaborated with SAHK in promoting the sport of floor curling in recent years. In 2021, Towngas sponsored the purchase of equipment and training materials, enabling nearly 100 service users from SAHK to participate in 97 floor curling training sessions. Last year, Towngas also sponsored the unique online event “Towngas × SAHK Halloween Floor Curling Fun Day”. And this year, Towngas continued its support by sponsoring this Floor Curling Fun Day event with SAHK. Mr Wong stated, “SAHK actively engages in partnerships with different corporates to organise a variety of activities, enabling our service users to enhance their physical well-being and explore their sporting potential. We hope that this event will not only provide them with an opportunity to rejuvenate their body and mind, but also promote the spirit of inclusivity.” He also expressed his heartfelt appreciation to Towngas for their unwavering support throughout the years.

Mr Isaac Yeung Chung-kwan, Head of Corporate ESG / Head of Corporate Affairs of Towngas, said in his speech, “I am thrilled to be able to take part in this magnificent sports event. Your commitment to training and preparation for the competition, along with your unwavering spirit, truly deserves our applause.”

The Floor Curling Fun Day received an overwhelming response, with nearly 100 service users from 13 hostels of SAHK forming multiple teams to participate. The Towngas Volunteer Services Team also sent 30 volunteers to serve in various positions and join in the inclusive floor curling matches with the service users. The competition included team floor curling, inclusive matches, and thrilling athletic competitions such as “Score With One Strike” and “Joyful Volleyball”. All service users joined in with great enthusiasm, applauding for every point scored, and cheering for their teammates. In addition, service users from different hostels collaborated to design their team uniforms, competing for awards such as the Best Team Uniform Design, Best Team Uniform Showcase, and Best Overall Team Uniform. This not only reflected the service users' sense of style and creativity in their uniform but also strengthened the team spirit between the service users and volunteers.

In the end, the Leung King Hostel claimed the championship in the team floor curling competition, while a team composed of members from the On Ting Hostel and Towngas secured the number one spot in the inclusive floor curling matches. The Lok Wah Hostel received the award for Best Team Uniform Design, and the Fu Tung Hostel was honoured with the Best Team Uniform Showcase award. The Woche Hostel emerged as the winner of the Best Overall Team Uniform award.

The event came to a close amidst a joyous and heartwarming atmosphere. SAHK would like to sincerely thank Towngas once again for their wholehearted support, ensuring the smooth and successful execution of the event.
