Expanding horizons: Towngas Management Trainee Programme ventures into various positions in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland

(1 December 2023) Talent is a crucial factor in sustaining a company’s vitality. In the upcoming Corporate Management Trainee Programme 2024, Towngas offers a two-year opportunity for Management Trainees (MTs) to gain practical experience in the Company’s different departments within Hong Kong. Moreover, MTs will have the chance to undergo cross-industry and cross-departmental training on the Chinese mainland, including exposure to popular sectors like ESG and renewable energy, establishing a strong career foundation for MTs.

Cindy Tsang Mei-wai joined Towngas as an MT in 2016 after graduating from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She explained that she decided to participate in the MT Programme because of the diverse opportunities presented to her. “The programme allowed me to learn in different departments such as engineering, finance, marketing and sales, customer service, supply chain management, and information technology. I also had the valuable experience of interning at a chemical plant for six months, which greatly contributed to my personal development.”

This year, Cindy made a transition from the Safety Department to the Corporate ESG Department, where she assumed the role of Assistant ESG Manager. Cindy is delighted to join the Corporate ESG Department and recognises the growing importance of ESG in recent years. She considers Towngas a leading ESG enterprise and aspires to pave a career path that offers broader opportunities for her here.

Toby Fung Ka-yi, who participated in the MT Programme in 2020, had a clear goal in mind. Having graduated from the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, she aimed to join a company that shared her values and was relevant to her academic background. “Towngas’ commitment to promoting green and smart energy development aligns with my own beliefs. Moreover, the Company’s diverse business portfolio and global presence appealed to me. During the programme, I had the opportunity to be involved in an LNG project in Weiyuan, Sichuan (Hezong Energy), which broadened my perspectives and facilitated my professional growth.” Currently, Toby is working at ECO, a Towngas subsidiary, where she is responsible for the Inner Mongolia methanol project, continuing her career development in green and smart energy.

In addition to its business operations in Hong Kong, Towngas has extended its presence to 29 provincial regions across the Chinese mainland. Leveraging its diverse business portfolio, the Company has launched the MT Programme to nurture a talented workforce. Mr Lam Ming-wing, Head of Corporate Human Resources and Head of Corporate Safety and Environment of Towngas, stated, “The MT Programme offers a two-year on-the-job training experience. During this period, MTs will be assigned to various departments in both Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, engaging in project developments across different sectors, including Hong Kong gas operations, mainland energy businesses, and other related areas. This programme can provide comprehensive learning opportunities. We hire for attitude, train for skills.”

Towngas is currently accepting applications for the new Corporate Management Trainee Programme intake, with the deadline set for 3 December. The programme has been redesigned to extend the duration of the mainland internship from 6 months to 12 months. This expansion aims to provide MTs with a more comprehensive understanding of the country’s energy policies, as well as the energy industry and culture on the Chinese mainland.
