Towngas ranked first in four CUHK Business Sustainability Indices

(3 November 2023) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has emerged as the top-ranked organisation in four Business Sustainability Indices (BSI), compiled by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). These indices include the Global BSI (Asia Pacific), the Greater China BSI, the Greater Bay Area BSI, and the Hong Kong BSI. Notably, Towngas has the prestige of being ranked first in the inaugural edition of the Global BSI.

The Centre for Business Sustainability of the CUHK Business School compiles the BSI annually in an effort to drive improvements in ESG management within companies and acknowledge those that have excelled in sustainable development. This year, Towngas has achieved inspiring results in multiple categories of the indices, especially its position as the top company in the inaugural edition of the Global BSI (Asia Pacific).

Besides, Towngas maintained its top positions in three other indices, namely the Greater China BSI (for three consecutive years), the Greater Bay Area BSI (for four consecutive years), and the Hong Kong BSI (for five consecutive years). In all four indices, the Gas Company has been recognised as an Exemplar, reflecting its thorough integration of socially responsible practices into its business model and its effective balancing of various stakeholders’ needs. Its progressive CSR strategy and implementation also provide an excellent example to other firms.

Mr Lam Ming-wing, Towngas Head of Corporate Human Resources and Head of Corporate Safety and Environment, expressed his delight about the Company’s achievement. He said, “The multitude of first-place rankings is a testament to Towngas’ leadership and contributions to sustainable development. It also serves as a source of motivation for us to continuously improve and elevate our performance. Towngas’ enduring success is built upon our strong core values, which govern our interactions with colleagues, customers, and stakeholders.” As a prominent energy company, the development of clean energy is pivotal for sustainable progress. Mr Lam continued, “Towngas nurtures the younger generation by establishing a safe and healthy work environment, providing growth opportunities through employee training, and cultivating diverse skills and knowledge. This enables our employees to showcase their talents to the fullest amidst the Company’s energy transition, thus constructing a sustainable and resilient team of professionals. Not only does this enhance the Company’s operational efficiency and productivity, but it also yields substantial mutual benefits for both employees and the Company, ultimately realising our vision of sustainable development.”

Mr Isaac Yeung Chung-kwan, Head of Corporate ESG / Head of Corporate Affairs of Towngas, attended the Business Sustainability Conference 2023 at CUHK and shared insights on how the Group manages and enhances ESG data. He stated, “To oversee and coordinate ESG data and strengthen disclosure, the Group has established an ESG Committee at the Board level, as well as cross-departmental working committees. We have collaborated to develop an ESG data manual, implement data collection processes, and enhance the standardisation and accuracy of our data. Furthermore, we remain vigilant in monitoring the latest ESG trends, continually improving our ESG data management mechanisms. Our aim is not only to establish transparent and open channels for communication and disclosure, but also to proactively plan ahead to meet the requirements of various frameworks. This ensures that our ESG performance remains at the forefront of the industry.”

In the future, Towngas remains committed to incorporating ESG elements into its various development strategies. It will actively collaborate with stakeholders to drive the energy transition and ensure a “just transition”, pursuing a low-carbon economy in a fair and equitable manner.
