Towngas’ environmental sanitation business in Changzhou facilitates governance of Lake Tai water environment

(21 November 2023) The Hong Kong China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has launched a sewage treatment project in Wujin District, Changzhou, Jiangsu. This project aims to collect and treat industrial wastewater and domestic sewage in the area, reducing the risk of pollutant emissions. With the project’s successful initiation, both Towngas and the local government aspire to strengthen their collaboration and make greater contributions to environmental conservation.

Towngas’ sewage treatment project is located in the Wujin District of Changzhou. It serves as a vital environmental infrastructure for the city. The newly constructed facility will handle additional industrial wastewater separately, ensuring it is not discharged into the urban domestic sewage treatment plant. The project involves the collection and treatment of both industrial wastewater and domestic sewage. The initial design capacity for sewage treatment is 30,000 tonnes per day, with plans to reach 50,000 tonnes per day in the future. This project effectively avoids the NIMBY (not in my backyard) effect and improves land utilisation efficiency. It plays a crucial role in promoting comprehensive water environmental management in the Lake Tai region, providing significant ecological, social, and economic benefits to Changzhou.

On 26 October, Mr Peter Wong Wai-yee, Managing Director of Towngas, along with the senior management team, conducted a site visit to the project with Mr Li Hao, Member of the Standing Committee of the Wujin District Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Party Working Committee of the Wujin National High-tech Industrial Zone, and Director of the Management Committee. During the visit, Mr Wong highly praised the project, and both Towngas and the Wujin District government agreed to deepen their collaboration and contribute further to environmental conservation initiatives.

The Towngas senior management team also visited the Changzhou Gas Safety Theme Park, which was open to the public in October. The theme park was jointly built by Changzhou Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited and Changzhou Liquefied Petroleum Gas Company Limited, and is filled with content such as knowledge on gas safety and natural gas applications. Mr Wong emphasised that safety is of paramount importance in gas operations. He stressed the need to integrate all resources, exert maximum effort, and approach safe gas production with a strong sense of responsibility.
