Towngas wins Outstanding Caring Award and Best CSV Award in Industry Cares Recognition Scheme 2023

(6 October 2023) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) is committed to fulfilling its social responsibility. On 26 September, the Company was honoured once again with the Outstanding Caring Award in the Enterprise Group by the Industrial Cares Recognition Scheme 2023. Going above and beyond in driving environmental protection initiatives, Towngas introduced Hong Kong’s first inter-plant heat transfer waste-to-energy project at its Tai Po Gas Production Plant. This project earned the Company the Best CSV Award in the Enterprise Group. The Industrial Cares Recognition Scheme, organised by the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, aims to recognise businesses that bring good benefits to society.

Towngas’ inter-plant heat transfer waste-to-energy project is a remarkable initiative. It involves harnessing the residual heat produced during gas production and transferring it to the neighbouring Maxim’s food factory for dehumidification, resulting in reduced energy consumption and lower carbon dioxide emissions. This project not only provides Maxim’s with a sustainable source of green energy but also helps address the challenge faced by Towngas in handling the hot water from its gas production process. By implementing this project, approximately 800 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions are reduced annually, equivalent to planting over 34,000 trees. Moreover, the project enables Maxim’s Group to save a significant amount of energy, totalling 6 million MJ per year. This project achieves both energy savings and cost reduction, creating a win-win situation for both companies.

Towngas was also presented the Outstanding Caring Award in the Enterprise Group of the Industrial Cares Recognition Scheme 2023. Towngas has been organising the “Rice Dumplings for the Community” programme, a large-scale community and charity event, for 24 consecutive years. This year, under the theme of “The Heritage of Love and Care”, young people and ethnic minorities also joined in wrapping rice dumplings for people in need. With the participation of volunteers from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, the event set a Guinness World Records™ title for “the most people making rice dumplings simultaneously online and in a single venue”. Through this remarkable feat, Towngas not only promotes social cohesion across all walks of life but also encourages diverse stakeholders to actively engage in caring for the community.

Furthermore, the Towngas Volunteer Service Team has been actively implementing the “Charitable Farming Joy” initiative since 2013. Volunteers, accompanied by their families, participate in organic farming activities, and the resulting harvest is donated to communities in need. In their pursuit of improved energy efficiency and production efficacy, our dedicated colleagues developed an innovative smart greenhouse system, which leverages the power of the Internet of Things (IoT) to support hydroponic operations, while also incorporating solar energy to provide power to the system. The Company has given away this smart greenhouse system to schools, hoping to facilitate the promotion of STEM education and the widespread adoption of smart farming practices.

Towngas will remain dedicated to upholding and advancing its corporate social responsibility. By incorporating the principles of corporate citizenship into its operational strategies and management practices, the Company actively contributes to society and strives to create shared value for all stakeholders.
