Towngas Volunteer Service Team celebrates 25th anniversary, igniting brilliance in every corner with its caring power

(18 April 2024) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) held a commemorative event today to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Towngas Volunteer Service Service Team (TVST). Mr Chris Sun Yuk-han, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, officiated the ceremony and cut the ribbon together with Mr Peter Wong Wai-yee, Managing Director of Towngas, and representatives from various social welfare organisations, wishing TVST a new milestone in utilising their caring power to ignite brilliance in every corner and continue to benefit the community.

The event was held in the style of a nostalgic dim sum restaurant, with around 200 elderly individuals and their carers invited to join in the celebration. The venue was meticulously decorated to faithfully replicate the decor of an old-style dim sum restaurant. Towngas’ management and senior executives joined hands with TVST members to transform into various roles, such as restaurant waiters, receptionists, and managers, to serve the elderly, hoping to bring back the familiar lively scenes and human touch from their memories. In addition, soft meals were specially prepared for elderly individuals with swallowing difficulties, allowing them to enjoy the pleasure of dining together and sharing a traditional Cantonese dim sum meal with their carers.

In his speech, Mr Chris Sun Yuk-han, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, first congratulated TVST on its 25th anniversary, saying, “25 years is not a brief period of time. If we measure it in terms of a person’s lifetime, it can be considered a significant milestone. What is most moving is that every Towngas volunteer contributes to society with their hands and sweat, which is no small feat. For society, the volunteer strength and contributions from the business community are of great importance.” He also expressed his hope that TVST will continue to uphold the excellent traditions of the past 25 years and accomplish even more in the future, spanning 25 years more and beyond.

Mr Peter Wong Wai-yee, Towngas Managing Director, said that since its establishment in 1999, TVST has contributed over 1 million service hours, and the cumulative number of beneficiaries has reached 8.5 million. TVST has also received numerous service awards, proving that their efforts have been recognised by the public. In his speech, he said, “Towngas deeply understands that times are changing, and the needs of society are constantly evolving. Volunteer services must also keep pace with the times. It is certain that with technological advancements, volunteer services will become more diversified, intelligent, and better suited to the needs of society. Wherever the Towngas Volunteer Service Team goes, they will undoubtedly leave behind a warm and caring touch, and this human touch will never change!”

At the same time, Mr Wong especially thanked the various social welfare organisations for their assistance and support to Towngas over the years, and hoped to continue working hand in hand in the future to extend love and care to more families and individuals in need.
