Towngas wins Junzi Corporation Award for Exemplary Business Practices for 4th consecutive years

(21 June 2023) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has always been committed to environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters and to promoting the spirit of noble, or “Junzi” in Confucianism terms, business practices. This year, for the fourth consecutive year, Towngas was awarded the Junzi Corporation Award for Exemplary Business Practices with Benevolence, the highest honour in the Junzi Corporation Award by the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK), as well as the “Junzi Corporation Award”, demonstrating the Company’s commitment to corporate ethics and social responsibility.

In 2011, the HSUHK introduced the concept of “Junzi”, a blend of business ethics and Confucianism, and awarded the Junzi Enterprise Awards to companies that embrace ethical business values and promote the five virtues of “Benevolence, Righteousness, Propriety, Wisdom and Trustworthiness”. Towngas is encouraged by receiving the Award for the fourth time.

Towngas has always been practising the Junzi way through its businesses and community service. In terms of “benevolence”, Towngas launched the HK$10-million Dining Coupon Scheme to support the underprivileged and help boost the business of the catering industry. During the year, Towngas also continued its 20-plus-year traditions of organising the “Rice Dumplings for the Community” and “Mooncakes for the Community” programmes, giving away 4.5 million rice dumplings and over 3 million mooncakes over the years.

In terms of “Righteousness”, Towngas is the first utility in Asia to adopt the S-Carbon platform to manage its supply chain, which not only helps Towngas to keep track of its own greenhouse gas (Scope 3) emissions data, but also motivates its suppliers to reduce carbon emissions and drive the industry chain towards sustainable development.

On the “Wisdom” side, Towngas joined hands with several social welfare organisations to launch the “Sending Warmth to Thousands with Smart Technology” donation programme to install Smart Controllers and Smart Meters for 10,000 families in need in Hong Kong for free, so that they can remotely monitor their gas appliances and turn the appliances off through a mobile app to enhance home safety. This innovation has transformed the smart technology concept into a real-life application and helped those most in need in society.

Benevolence also means love and care. Over the years, Towngas has demonstrated its love for people, society and the planet by providing gas supply services and committing to environmental protection on the one hand, and actively serving the community on the other, especially by caring for and supporting the grassroots. Towngas aims to utilise “Smart Energy for a Brighter Future” and promote sustainable development, and will continue to uphold this spirit in the future, hoping to influence more companies to practise the Junzi way.
