Towngas unveils “Energypedia” learning cards, provides copies to schools to promote energy and environmental education

(3 July 2023) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (“Towngas”; stock code: 0003.HK) is committed to building a sustainable future, with an emphasis on nurturing the next generation. In view of the increased focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) education in schools in recent years, the Group is releasing the “Energypedia” learning cards this summer, allowing students to learn about energy in a fun and easy way. The learning cards will be on sale at the Hong Kong Book Fair and various bookstores from 19 July onwards, and the Group is planning to give local schools free copies of “Energypedia” learning cards as a supplementary teaching aid to increase students’ interest in energy science.

Mr Isaac Yeung Chung-kwan, Towngas Head of Corporate ESG / Head of Corporate Affairs, said, “As the looming threats of global warming, the energy crisis, and other environmental issues continue to pose significant challenges, the need for carbon reduction is accelerating. To address these pressing matters, we have developed the "Energypedia" learning cards, which aim to stimulate students' interest in energy science and engineering, as well as environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. Our goal is to enrich their knowledge of these subjects and, more importantly, to help them understand the importance of practicing green and low-carbon living. By doing so, we hope to work with them to promote sustainable development in the future.”

The "Energypedia" learning cards have been recommended by experts such as Dr. Dominic Tong Shiu-sing, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Mr. Shun Chi-ming, the former Director of the Hong Kong Observatory. These cards consist of 52 informative cards that cover five topics: historical anecdotes, new energy knowledge, scientific fun facts, ESG glossary, and expert insights. The content has been tailored to meet the learning needs of students from upper primary to junior secondary levels and includes stories that explore the impact of global warming, renewable energy development, and the research of outstanding scientists. Each set of learning cards comes with a booklet containing a detailed version of the text printed on the card, which is suitable for students to read on their own or for parents to read with their children.

Our Group has been collaborating with various stakeholders in the community to promote energy knowledge and environmental education. To further this objective, we plan to distribute free copies of the "Energypedia" learning cards to a number of primary schools in the upcoming school year. Our aim is to assist teachers in teaching relevant scientific topics and to enhance students' understanding of the subject matter.

The "Energypedia" learning cards consist of 52 cards, with some of the energy stories introduced with questions designed to pique students' interest in energy science. For instance, some of the questions include whether there is any use of coal in town gas production, whether a typhoon is a good time for wind power generation, and who came up with Christmas tree decoration.
