Towngas wins Gold Prize at Smart Ageing Awards for its effort in building smart ageing society with technology

(13 August 2023) Hong Kong is moving towards an ageing society, and the number of people with dementia is on the rise. The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has made use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to develop its own Smart Controller and Smart Meter, which not only keep users updated on their appliances’ status but also allows them to turn off the appliances in an emergency. As such, elderly people can continue to enjoy the fun of cooking, while family members and carers can enjoy greater peace of mind. With these smart products, Towngas was recently awarded the Gold Prize in the Living & Lifestyle category at the 2nd Smart Ageing Awards organised by the Golden Age Foundation.

To promote smart products and home safety to the public, Towngas participated in the Golden Age Expo and Summit for the second consecutive year, showcasing smart products such as Smart Controllers and Smart Meters to introduce the Company’s innovative technology achievements. Mr Don Cheng Hill-kwong, Towngas Head of Commercial – HK Utility, said, “Our self-developed Smart Controllers can be connected to customers’ existing appliances, so that the users and their carers can monitor the status of the appliances together via mobile phones, and the appliances can be switched off remotely in case of an emergency, greatly enhancing home safety, and is suitable for families with dementia-afflicted seniors.”

In addition, Towngas’ Smart Meters are equipped with an automatic reporting function, eliminating the need for the elderly to take meter readings by themselves. When the Smart Meter detects abnormal usage or minor leakage, it will cut off the gas supply.

The 8th Golden Age Expo and Summit (2023) was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 11 to 13 August, and the second edition of the Smart Ageing Awards was organised to recognise outstanding services and products that bring quality, independence and dignity to the lives of the golden generation. Towngas won the Gold Prize in the Living & Lifestyle category for its smart products. Mr Don Cheng added that Towngas has always taken up its social responsibility to enhance the safety and functionality of its products and to put ageing in place into practice through technology. He was encouraged by the recognition of his colleagues’ efforts and pledged that the Company would continue to utilise “Smart Energy for a Brighter Future”.

Towngas earlier launched the Sending Warmth to Thousands with Smart Technology programme, donating 10,000 sets of Smart Controllers and Smart Meters to families in need. The programme has been recognised by the Jockey Club Age-friendly City Partnership Scheme 2022 with the Age-friendly Business Innovation Award, and has also shone on the international stage, winning the “Innovation of The Year - Ageing-In-Place Model” award at the 11th Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards.
