Towngas kicks off participation in Strive and Rise Programme with Towngas Green Day for mentees and mentors

(12 March 2023) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) is an active participant in the HKSAR Government’s Strive and Rise Programme. As a supporting organisation, Towngas hosted the first Towngas Green Day on 11 March, inviting mentees and mentors to visit the Towngas headquarters and the Tai Po Gas Production Plant to learn more about the development of energy services and clean energy.

The Towngas Green Day was an eventful visit, with the mentees and mentors arriving at the Towngas headquarters in the morning to learn more about the Company’s efforts in providing safe, quality and environmentally friendly energy services to Hong Kong for over 160 years. They also got to know about the Company’s green business development on the Chinese mainland, such as smart energy, renewable energy and municipal waste treatment, as well as the Group’s efforts in environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. They also visited the Hall of Innovation and the Hall of Future Energy in the headquarters building to find out about the innovative equipment and technologies developed by Towngas staff, as well as the Company’s application and vision for renewable energy and energy management projects.

To enhance interaction, the Company prepared a problem-solving game and a virtual reality (VR) game to raise awareness of gas safety and engineering by allowing mentors and mentees to take on the role of a special task force to assist customers in solving their problems.

In addition, Towngas arranged for the mentees and mentors to visit the Tai Po Gas Production Plant, including a tour of the natural gas receiving station and the latest hydrogen extraction facility, to introduce the process of gas production, hydrogen production and hydrogen supply technology.

A form-one mentee surnamed Tse said, “The Towngas Green Day was pretty special to me as it was the first time visiting a gas plant. I was surprised to learn that there is no coal in town gas production. Also, there were a lot of solar panels inside the gas plant. The whole production process was greener and cleaner than I thought.”

Ms Fong, a mentor, also mentioned, “The event was an eye-opening and inspiring experience not only for the mentees but also for me, as I also learned more about new energy sources and gained new knowledge about gas production.”

Mr Lam Ming-wing, the Head of Corporate Safety & Environment of Towngas, said, “Towngas values the young people and has been investing heavily in nurturing and supporting many of the outstanding engineers and managers we have today. We believe that working hard today can make a difference and create a better future.

The Towngas Green Day kicked off the Company’s participation in the Strive and Rise Programme, with two more “Towngas Green Days” to be held in May and July. The Company is looking forward to reaching out to more young people and helping them to “strive and rise”.
