Towngas awarded Age-friendly Business Innovation Award for its groundbreaking elderly-friendly products

(12 May 2023) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has been shouldering its social responsibility and supporting the people in need in the community with innovative technologies. To enhance home safety for the elderly, Towngas has developed its own Smart Controller and Smart Meter to allow the elderly and their family members to monitor the gas appliance status and turn the appliance off remotely with a mobile app in case of an emergency. Recently, Towngas also joined hands with social welfare organisations to launch the “Sending Warmth to Thousands with Smart Technology” campaign, providing free installations of the devices for 10,000 Hong Kong households in need. The campaign has been recognised by the Jockey Club Age-friendly City Partnership Scheme 2022 with the Age-friendly Business Innovation Award.

Towngas was encouraged by the recognition of the campaign. Mr Daniel Fung Man-kit, the Head of Strategy & Innovation and Commercial – Hong Kong Utility of Towngas, said, “Innovation is at the heart of Towngas’ corporate culture, and we will continue to help those in need in the community with innovative technologies, products and solutions, and strive to fill the social service gap so that the neglected can also be supported. The public’s recognition of our use of technology to facilitate “ageing in place” has encouraged the Company to continue to utilise ‘Smart Energy for a Brighter Future’. ”

The Smart Controller and Smart Meter are developed in-house by Towngas, incorporating the Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The Smart Controller can be installed as an add-on to the user’s existing appliance, so that they can monitor the appliance with their mobile phone and turn it off remotely anytime, anywhere. It can also be connected to eight mobile devices simultaneously, allowing the elderly and their carers to monitor the appliance, making it suitable for elderly people with mild cognitive impairment and their carers. The Smart Meter, on the other hand, is equipped with an automatic meter reading reporting function, eliminating the need for the elderly to take meter readings by themselves. When abnormal usage or leaks are detected, the Smart Meter can also automatically cut off the gas supply, further ensuring home safety.

Towngas has earlier launched the “Sending Warmth to Thousands with Smart Technology” campaign, donating 10,000 sets of Smart Controllers and Smart Meters to households in need with free on-site installation, enhancing home safety for the elderly and relieving the stress of their carers. This Towngas initiative was recently awarded the Age-friendly Business Innovation Award under the Age-friendly City Partnership Scheme for developing new business portfolios and creating business opportunities through the introduction of innovative elderly-and age-friendly products.
The Jockey Club Age-friendly City Partnership Scheme aims to encourage stakeholders from different community segments, including the business sector, government departments and public organisations, to work together to create an age-friendly culture and environment in the community.
