Towngas Green Day again hosts Strive and Rise mentees at Tai Po Plant for sneak peek at future energy development

(7 May 2023) In support of the Strive and Rise Programme initiated by the HKSAR Government, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) held the Towngas Green Day on 6 May, inviting mentees and mentors from the Programme to visit its headquarters and the Tai Po Gas Production Plant, in order to learn more about the public utility with the longest history in Hong Kong, including the development of smart energy and its latest hydrogen energy facility.

Rooted in Hong Kong for 160 years, Towngas has always been socially responsible and committed to nurturing young people. The Company gave an allowance to each staff member who joined the Programme as a mentor, so that they could take their mentees to participate in different types of activities and experiences, broadening their horizons and helping them establish a clearer direction for their life planning. A total of 31 Towngas employees are participating as mentors for the Programme.

In addition to the staff participation in the Programme, Towngas also organised the Towngas Green Day for the mentees. The itinerary included a visit to the Towngas headquarters to learn about how the Company is providing Hong Kong with low-emission and clean energy that contributes to only 1% of the total carbon emissions in the territory, as well as its environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategies and initiatives.

Through the visit to the Hall of Innovation in the headquarters building, mentees were able to learn about the equipment and technologies developed by the Company’s staff, stimulating their innovative thinking. On the other hand, the Hall of Future Energy showcased the opportunities presented by Towngas as a Hong Kong-based energy company that manages over 600 projects on the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, covering smart energy, new energy, water supply and eco-friendly waste treatment.

Towngas also arranged for mentees and mentors to visit the Tai Po Gas Production Plant, which is rarely open to the public, to introduce the gas production process and explain to them its plan to supply safe and efficient hydrogen energy.

The Company also prepared a fun problem-solving game and a virtual reality (VR) game for mentors and mentees to enjoy, in which they could role-play as members of a special task force to help customers deal with their issues, raising their understanding of gas safety and engineering in the process.

A Form 3 mentee surnamed Chan said, “The Towngas Green Day gave me a comprehensive understanding of the gas production process, where technology is used to make gas supply safer and more convenient. The tour also showed me the future energy trend, and I learned that developing renewable energy is more environmentally friendly and efficient. It was also a great experience to know about the importance of occupational safety and health through activities such as VR games.”

A mentor surnamed Ting also said, “This event allowed both my mentee and I to gain more knowledge about town gas and the eco-friendly elements within the gas production process. The activities were very interesting and interactive, and my mentee was very enthusiastic about answering the quiz questions. In addition, the activities also enhanced the mentee’s interest in science and mathematics, which will have a positive impact on her future life planning.”

Mr Peter Wong Wai-yee, the Managing Director of Towngas, said, “Our jobs at Towngas are closely connected to ‘strive and rise’ – we strive to join hands with different sectors in the community and rise to the challenge to enable future generations to have access to clean energy. We will keep developing hydrogen energy, photovoltaic and other renewable energy sources, and moving towards the “Go Green” goal. We also hope that the Towngas Green Day can stimulate mentees’ interest in energy engineering and public services, and inspire them to explore various topics such as environmental protection, low carbon and ESG, so that together we can pass the idea of green energy on and promote a sustainable future.”

Towngas has organised two Towngas Green Days so far, and the response has been overwhelming. With one last Towngas Green Day to be held in July, the Company hopes to inspire more young people to create a better tomorrow together.
