Clean Production

Clean Production

Working to produce gas as cleanly and efficiently as practicable, our production plant in Tai Po has been certified to ISO 14001 standards in recognition of our efforts to align our environmental management to international standards. Our Environmental Management System (EMS) at our production plants in Ma Tau Kok and Tai Po, together with all our operations, fully comply with relevant environmental regulatory requirements.
At present, greenhouse gas emissions from the production and consumption of town gas represent only about 1 per cent and 3.8 per cent of Hong Kong’s total emissions respectively.

From Coal to Naphtha and Natural Gas

As far back as 1973, we switched our production feedstock from coal and heavy oil to naphtha, which yields a cleaner gas with higher efficiency. The extremely low sulphur content in naphtha has also reduced the emission of sulphur dioxide, a major contributor to acid rain.

Minimising the environmental impact of our gas production process even further, we introduced natural gas as a dual feedstock with naphtha, in our gas production in 2006. Natural gas is one of the cleanest fossil fuels available, leading to the cleaner production of towngas as well as the reduction of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and sulphur oxide emissions, bringing further improvement to the air quality in Hong Kong. This dual feedstock mix also enhances the reliability of our town gas supply.

Investing in the long term usage of natural gas in Hong Kong, a pair of 34 km-long high-pressure submarine pipelines have been constructed to deliver the natural gas from the Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal in Chengtoujiao in Shenzhen to our gas production plant in Tai Po.

 Landfill Gas

Landfill gas is formed when waste is decomposed by bacteria in an anaerobic environment at the bottom of a landfill site. This gas comprises mainly methane, carbon dioxide and small amounts of non-methane hydrocarbons. Landfill gas is mostly flared off, releasing greenhouse gases which accelerate climate change.

We proactively promote the application of renewable energy by constructing landfill gas treatment plants that remove carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and non-methane hydrocarbons from the raw landfill gas using professional technology. The treated gas, also known as synthetic natural gas, can be used as fuel in gas production, turning waste to energy.

Energy Efficient Production

The use of energy involves an energy supply chain. Our Towngas supply systems only lose 10% of their energy during the production process and total energy efficiencies, together with appliance efficiencies, are much higher than coal-fired plants.
