Towngas

In 2000, the ECO Energy Company Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Towngas, was awarded a 21-year contract for the design, construction and operation of dedicated LPG filling stations in support of the SAR Government's initiative to improve urban air quality. To date, there are a total of 12 dedicated stations in Hong Kong, with five of them operated by ECO.

	Background
		Our company has always been supportive of, and committed to, environmental protection. We fully support the government's initiative to reduce the use of diesel fuel for transportation. LPG vehicles will significantly reduce the emission of a considerable amount of respirable suspended particulates and nitrogen oxides, a major source of air pollution in Hong Kong.

ECO stations

The LPG filling station business will create synergies with the Company's core gas business, capitalising on our experience and expertise to develop more market opportunities. Towngas will also provide the necessary technical support for this new business, including the routine and emergency maintenance of facilities.

Towngas has invested more than HK$40 million in the ECO sites in Chai Wan, Mei Foo, Tuen Mun, West Kowloon and Wan Chai. These five strategically located ECO stations are open 24 hours a day, and are able to serve more than 9,000 taxis per day.

	Future potential
		The conversion rate for taxis is much higher than the government had originally envisaged. More than 90 per cent of the 18,000 diesel taxis in Hong Kong have now changed to LPG. We expect business in this sector to remain robust, particularly with the Government's endorsement of voluntary conversion to LPG of over 4,000 public minibuses and its ongoing commitment to improve Hong Kong's air quality. The diversification into the LPG refilling business is a manifestation of Towngas' corporate mission of protecting the environment. We are keen to see that our technical expertise, safety practices and excellent customer service are extended to this very important environmental project for Hong Kong.
