During the year, Towngas made every effort to contribute to sustainable development. As a responsible corporate citizen, our practices comply with, and often surpass, all applicable business, environmental, OHS and social legislation, standard practices and industry guidelines.

In 2007, we passed several critical milestones in this area and received a number of awards and honours along the way.

2007 Milestones and Achievements:

 
Operations
  • Almost 1.65 million Hong Kong households are town gas users.
  • Managed a total of 77 projects across 16 provinces and municipalities on the mainland.
  • Earned HK$14,226 million in revenues.
  • Invested HK$1,595.2 million in pipelines and other facilities in Hong Kong and the mainland.
  • Received PAS 55 certification for our asset management system, covering our gas production plants, gas holders, transmission and distribution systems, service risers and meters, to enhance our gas infrastructure safety and efficiency.

  • The NENT landfill gas utilisation project in Ta Kwu Ling, one of the largest landfill gas utilisation projects in the world, was commissioned.
  • We achieved electricity savings of 7,679,426 kWh, translating into an equivalent reduction of 5,376 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
  • We signed the Hong Kong Green Purchasing Charter as a Founding Member.
  • As a requirement of doing business, our pipelaying and appliance installation contractors were asked to submit Environmental Management Plans.
  • Two new equipment models – a highly efficient super-flame built-in hob and a commercial water heater performing at a high thermal efficiency of 84%, were launched.
  • Collected 14 different types of waste for recycling or reuse in Hong Kong.
 
Health and Safety
  • Awards received
  • Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Award – Safety Enhancement Programme Award/Gold Award
  • Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Award – OSH Annual Report /Silver Award
  • The third Hong Kong Red Cross Inter-corporate Competition – Golden Award, Household First Aid
  • OHSAS 18001 (or GB/T 28001) certification for U-Tech and Joint Ventures in Wuhan, Longkou and Huzhou
  • Inspected over 14,600 sites and carried out over 7,500 km of leakage survey on our pipelines
  • Carried out over 900,000 residential installation inspections to check pipe conditions and to identify appliances that may need maintenance or upgrading.
  • With a record-low Injury Industrial Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) of 0.32 and 16 industrial accident injuries in 2007, these figures represent a decrease of 52.2% and 51.5% over 2006.
  • A total of 17 safety and risk management audits and 63 safety inspections were conducted for JVs.
 
Social
  • Awards received
  • Hong Kong Volunteer Award: First runner-up in the Highest Service Hour Award (Private Organisations – Best Customers Participation)
  • Established a new Guinness world record with the making of the largest collection of rice dumplings on a single occasion, in our “Rice Dumplings for the Community” event. In addition, the event raised over HK$840,000 in funds for the Community Chest.
  • Launched “COOK EASY”, the first food pack delivery service in Hong Kong and our first social enterprise initiative.
  • Our “Cooking for Fun – Children’s English Learning Workshop” continued to help and support children from needy families.
  • We made donations totalling HK$3,985,000 to support charitable organisations, green groups and other services in the community.
  • Participated in 117 volunteer activities and accumulated a total of 38,935 service hours with contributions from 6,829 volunteers. Their efforts benefited 33,660 people.
  • Grooming more than 1,000 apprentices over the years, Technical Training Centre celebrated its 40th Anniversary.
  • During the year, Towngas employees received around 28,721 man-hours in Health, Safety and Environmental training.
