As a responsible corporate citizen, we have always endeavored to achieve new highs, not only in our operations but also in our environmental, safety and social performance. As such, at a minimum our practices comply with, though in reality they often surpass, applicable legislation, standard practices and industry guidelines.

- 2008 Hong Kong Awards for Industries: Productivity and Quality Grand Awards
- Almost 1.67 million Hong Kong households are town gas users.
- Managed a total of 86 projects across 18 provinces and municipalities on the mainland.
- Earned HK$12,352 million in revenues.
- Invested HK$2,895 million in pipelines and other facilities in Hong Kong and the mainland China.
- Commissioned the first coalbed methane liquefaction plant and compressed natural gas filling station in mainland China.
- Started diversifying into more eco-energy and coal-based chemical industries.
- Integrated asset management and risk management under the auspices of a high-level Corporate Safety and Quality Management Steering Committee chaired by the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer.
- Adopted a risk-based quality assurance approach for key supplies and issued a CSR Code of Practice for Suppliers.
- Conducted surveys with regard to our major suppliers covering about 80% of the goods and materials purchased by our Hong Kong operations.

- Federation of Hong Kong Industries’ “One Factory-One Year-One Environmental Project (1-1-1)” Programme: Green Medallist
- Wastewi$e Scheme: Gold Wastewi$e Logo (2002-2008)
- One of the first organisations to endorse the “Carbon Reduction Charter” initiated by the Hong Kong Government.
- Completed the first carbon audit for our Hong Kong operations, and successfully certified our in-house carbon inventory accounting procedures to ISO 14064-1 Standards for the quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals.
- Increased the proportion of natural gas in our feedstock to 50%.
- All Bauhinia water heaters passed the mainland’s mandatory energy efficiency requirements, which became effective in June 2008.
- Introduced a new commercial water heater and a steam cabinet with heating efficiency 10% and 21% respectively higher than previous models.
- Collected 20 different types of waste for recycling or reuse in Hong Kong.
- Achieved ISO 14001 certification for JVs in Suzhou.

- Awards received
- 2008 Hong Kong Occupational Safety & Health Award – Bronze Award on Safety Promotion
- Occupational Safety & Health Award – Bronze Award on OHS Annual Reporting
- Achieved a best safety record for the year with a record-low Injury Industrial Accident Frequency Rate (AFR) of 0.24 with 12 industrial accident injuries in 2008 for our Hong Kong operations.
- Completed a major crisis management table top exercise in Hong Kong.
- Implemented a Behavioural Based Safety programme for two pilot units.
- Received OHSAS 18001 certification for ECO Environmental Investments Limited, Maanshan ECO Auto Fuel Company Limited, and JVs in Yixing, Maanshan, Guangzhou, Changzhou and Suzhou.
- Commenced safety audits for Towngas China Company Limited (TCCL) and completed the second round of these audits for Hong Kong China Gas Investments Limited (HCIL).
- Completed and distributed the Standard HSE Manual for JVs and Corporate Risk Management Guidelines to all JVs, with five regional workshops organised for over 200 safety managers from all JVs.
- Completed two major crisis management table top exercises in mainland China.
- Met our target to have 80% of managerial staff in HCIL JVs’ Risk Management Departments as certified safety engineers.
- Initiated an alliance together with other four leading gas utilities in mainland China to develop a polyethylene gas pipeline integrity assurance system model for the gas utility industry in the country.

- Hong Kong Volunteer Awards: Champions in the Highest Service Hour Award (Private Organisations – Best Customers Participation)
- Steering Committee on the Promotion of Volunteer Service of the Social Welfare Department: Champions in the Best Corporate Volunteer Service Project Competition 2007-08, for our “Cooking for Fun” English Workshops
- “COOK EASY” took off, meeting our target to sell 10,000 packs.
- Launched the concession scheme for single parent families in Hong Kong.
- Introduced fair trade products and goods from social enterprises in our retail outlets in Hong Kong.
- Participated in 163 volunteer activities and accumulated a total of 38,852 service hours with contributions from 7,514 volunteers. These efforts benefited some 337,869 people.
- Launched a five-day work week programme in Hong Kong for better work-life balance.
- Launched the TLC+ leadership development programme to ensure our ongoing sustainability, and relaunched our Professional Qualification Policy to foster professional excellence.
