Q1 What is natural gas?
Natural gas, one of the cleanest forms of fossil fuels, is a colourless and odourless combustible gas found in gas and oil fields. There are abundant reserves of natural gas in many parts of the world, including Russia, Australia, China and Indonesia. The natural gas we use comes from Northwestern Australia.

Natural gas is made up mainly of methane, which is composed of carbon and hydrogen. It burns more cleanly than other fossil fuels, producing fewer emissions of sulphur, carbon and nitrogen. When natural gas is released into the atmosphere, it dissipates rapidly as it is lighter than air.

Q2 Why is Towngas using natural gas to produce town gas?
The main reason is that natural gas is a clean fossil fuel that emits far fewer harmful pollutants into the atmosphere when it is burned. Also, natural gas as the use of feedstock (the raw material to produce town gas) in addition to naphtha ensures a more reliable supply of town gas for Hong Kong, and bring econormic benefits to our customers.

Q3 Is there any difference between the town gas produced from natural gas and that produced from naphtha?
No. Both produce identical town gas.

Q4 Do we need to make adjustments to existing appliances because natural gas is now being used to produce town gas?
No. You are not directly using natural gas for cooking or heating. Natural gas is used as feedstock at our Tai Po Gas Production Plant to produce town gas, which Hong Kong customers have been using for over 140 years.

Q5 Have any changes been made to the charge mechanism because natural gas is now being used to produce town gas?
No. In fact, customers will enjoy savings on their gas bills under the fuel cost adjustment mechanism.

Q6 How can I determine the amount of money I've saved on my gas bill?
The amount saved will be shown on your gas bill each month, in this format:
