The twin submarine gas pipelines connecting the liquefied natural gas receiving terminal at Chengtoujiao, Shenzhen, China and our Tai Po gas production plant are about 34 kilometres long. In designing the pipelines, one of the core guiding principles was that they have the smallest possible impact on the environment and marine ecology. The route avoids close proximity to marine parks, artificial reefs and other sensitive sites, and the pipes themselves are buried beneath the seabed and also covered by several layers of rock. Installation of the pipelines commenced in early 2005 and finished in April 2006. Throughout the construction process, the quality of the surrounding waters was regularly monitored in compliance with Environmental Protection Department requirements.
